The history of Western Europe, dominated by patriarchal extractivism, colonialism and capitalism is written in the most part by the hands of the men who have destroyed feminine structures, indigenous voices, and natural resources. Yet these histories are today's shared histories. Through this work, the third in a trilogy of pieces, the concert installation strives to dwell on the discomfort of looking at history, as a catalyst to ask ourself how to move forward. The Resonant Silence of the title, is not a specific voice, or a silence that the piece is trying to resolve or answer. But as Orwell writes in 1984, "Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.", it is only by honestly recognising this silence that is written in to the past, that we can release the potential to create new futures, and stop repeating the abuses of those who have gone before us, and that continue today.

Resonant Silence is devised in creative collaboration and dialogue with conductor and violinist Halldis Rønning, choreographer and dancer Astrid Groseth and set designer Elisabeth Holager Lund to create a work that sits with the discomfort of the silences of history. It began in 2019 with multiple recording sessions over a year in the old Marres family villa in Maastricht together with musicians Mari Kvien Brunvoll and Martin Taxt, and photographic artist Jochem vanden Ecker. A large array of Sommer Eide’s custom made and modified instruments were used during the recording, exploring new forms of improvisations mingling light and sound and the architectural acoustics and histories of the rooms. The result was first exhibited in 2020 as an experimental spatial album installed in the Marres building. For Borealis 2022 the album will be reworked and re-installed in the old villa Christinegaard Hovedgaard in the historical area of Sandviken in Bergen.

Inspired by Virginia Woolf’s novel with which the project shares its title, The Waves explores ideas of repetition, absence and multiple perspectives. Following the shadows of the musicians, the listener experiences a musical journey that transports them from one room to the next. They hear sequences, melodies and rhythms where the voices and perspectives of the performers are multiplied and heard from many angles at once, as in an imaginary hall of sound mirrors. A music that highlight the building itself as container for possible worlds, unobserved, unoccupied by any particular subject.

Sommer Eide writes, ”In The Waves, you don’t exactly know where the voices are coming from or who is speaking. Reflecting on residency time spent in Bergen in conversations, at concerts, performing and running workshops with musicians and non-musicians, this new work centres notions of solidarity and community action through sound and music, in defence of democratic spaces. The work's title is two fold: John Steinbeck's 1942 novel The Moon is Down, a fictional account of the Norwegian WW2 resistance, inspired Trammell to explore contemporary models of resistance in Norway today, and this new work is in essence a modern reading of the same story. "The Status Quo Is My Enemy", draws on conversations about normative behaviour in Norwegian society, and how Scandinavia's seemingly harmonious social models can be alienating for those who are marginalised for reasons of skin colour, gender or background.
