Midtpunktet denne kvelden er et nytt verk fra den anerkjente amerikanske komponisten og improvisatu00f8ren Roscoe Mitchell som gjester Bergen i anledning Borealis. Sammen med sin medmusiker og samarbeidspartner over mange u00e5r, John McCowen, har han arrangert en ny versjon for militu00e6rband av det ikoniske verket sitt NONAAH. Verket som opprinnelig ble skrevet for solo-saksofon, ble fu00f8rst spillt inn i 1976 og bestod av ville, vinklede hopp over hele registeret til saksofonen. I lu00f8pet av ti-u00e5rene som fulgte har Mitchell bearbeidet dette verket til ulike versjoner bu00e5de for trio, kvartett, kammerorkester og orkester, med ulik intensitet og kompleksitet. Det er dette velbevandrede verket som denne kvelden fremfu00f8res av Sju00f8forvarets musikkorps.
Ellers fu00e5r man hu00f8re den norske komponisten og dirigenten Rolf Gupta sin siste utvikling av et verk som utforsker den vediske hymnen, Nu0101sadu012bya Su016bkta u2013 en vakker tekst om opprinnelsen av universet i den vediske tradisjonen.
Kristine Tju00f8gersen sitt verk Spiracle for brasskvintett u00e5pner hele kvelden, der slap tounge-teknikk og flagrende lette lyder gir en assosiasjon til pustemekanismene til de som lever under vannoverflaten.
Virtuosic improvisation, vedic chanting and the breathing openings of sharks find their way in to this stellar lineup of new composition for the Norwegian Naval Forces Band. At the centre of the evening is a new work from acclaimed American composer and improviser Roscoe Mitchell who, with his longu2013term collaborator John McCowen, has arranged a new iteration of his iconic solo saxophone work for Navy Band. First recorded in 1976, the original, solo saxophone version of NONAAH was characterised by wild, angular jumps across the complete register of the instrument, and over the last five decades this confronting musical material has been woven by Mitchell in to new versions for trio, quartet, chamber orchestra and orchestra, with varying intensity and complexity. Itu2019s this compelling sound world that takes a new form in this concert at the hands of the Norwegian Naval Forces Band.
Norwegian composer and conductor Rolf Gupta, presents the latest evolution of his work exploring the vedic hymn, Nu0101sadu012bya Su016bkta u2013 one of the most beautiful texts about the creation of the universe in the Vedic tradition. Guptau2019s piece deploys the brass textures of the Navy Band in both rhythmic and drone materials, bridging both scored and improvised elements.
Opening the night, Kristine Tju00f8gersenu2019s Spiracle for brass quintet evokes through slap tongues and fluttering airy tones, the breathing apparatus of the undersea world.
